Background of the study
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a strategic priority for businesses seeking to balance profit-making with ethical practices. In Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, local enterprises are increasingly adopting CSR initiatives to build stronger community ties and enhance their market reputation (Udo, 2023). Traditionally, businesses in Eket operated with minimal community engagement, leading to mistrust and social disconnection. However, recent shifts toward CSR have prompted companies to invest in environmental conservation, community health, and education programs, thereby positioning themselves as socially responsible actors (Ekanem, 2024). These initiatives not only improve the quality of life in local communities but also create a competitive advantage for the companies involved. Despite the positive outlook, the tangible impact of CSR on business performance and community development remains underexplored. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of CSR practices among local businesses in Eket, examining the relationship between corporate responsibility, operational efficiency, and community well-being. The research intends to reveal how CSR can drive sustainable development and foster economic growth, while addressing social challenges. An evaluation of CSR strategies will provide actionable insights for both business leaders and policymakers (Okon, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Local businesses in Eket face persistent challenges stemming from inadequate community engagement and resource limitations. Although many enterprises have adopted CSR initiatives, there is limited empirical evidence on how these efforts translate into improved business performance and community development (Udo, 2023). Inconsistent implementation and lack of clear metrics for evaluating CSR activities result in varied outcomes, with some initiatives failing to achieve intended social and economic benefits (Ekanem, 2024). This disconnect hinders the full potential of CSR as a tool for sustainable growth and societal improvement. The absence of standardized CSR practices further complicates the assessment of their effectiveness, leaving critical questions about their long-term impact unanswered (Okon, 2023).

Objectives of the study (3):

  1. To assess the extent of CSR implementation among local businesses in Eket.

  2. To analyze the impact of CSR on business performance and community development.

  3. To develop recommendations for enhancing CSR strategies in the local business sector.

Research questions (3):

  1. How is CSR integrated into local business models in Eket?

  2. What measurable impacts do CSR initiatives have on community development?

  3. What challenges do businesses face in implementing effective CSR?

Research Hypotheses (3):

  1. CSR initiatives positively influence the economic performance of local businesses.

  2. There is a significant relationship between CSR practices and community development outcomes.

  3. Effective CSR integration enhances both business sustainability and social welfare.

Significance of the study
This study elucidates the critical role of CSR in driving business success and community development in Eket. Its findings will benefit business leaders and policymakers by revealing how strategic CSR practices can foster sustainable growth and strengthen community ties. Enhanced CSR implementation can lead to increased consumer loyalty, improved operational efficiency, and greater social well-being (Udo, 2023; Ekanem, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of CSR practices on local businesses and community development in Eket Local Government Area, focusing on corporate social responsibility activities.

Definitions of terms (3):

  1. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Business practices that contribute to societal goals.

  2. Local Businesses: Enterprises operating within a specific regional boundary.

  3. Community Development: Initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of a community.
